The 103rd Annual Meeting of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy was held on May 19 to 22 in Portland, Oregon.  During the meeting, Eric S. Kastango, MBA, RPh, FASHP, of Clinical IQ delivered the following presentation:

Since USP Chapter <797> was published two years ago, pharmacists and technicians have been working hard to meet the challenges of the USP chapter and to improve their sterile compounding operations.  For example, current USP 797 requires only air sampling as part of an environmental monitoring program.

Protecting Patients and Employees Through Better Work Practices

In January of 2007, Eric Kastango and Baxter Healthcare paid a visit to the Hospital Pharmacists' Association in Ireland.  The event, titled "Advances in Targeted Therapies: Where Next & How," was held at The Conrad Hotel in Dublin on January 18.   Eric Kastango and Baxter Healthcare presented Applying Aseptic Compounding Standards to Protect Patients and Employees. The topic is targeted at pharmacists and technicians who are being asked to prepare newer therapeutic agents (vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, investigational gene therapy medications) and need to consider the controls and work practices that will both protect themselves and the environment from accidental exposure and maintaining sterility.
